OAE & ABR FOR INFANT SCREENING AND DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
The National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference on Early Identification of Hearing Impairment concluded that otoacoustic emissions (OAE) and auditory evoked potential (ABR) testing should be used for universal screening. The following product information should be considered when planning a program:
SCREENING ABR
The Bio-logic Systems Corporation product line includes the Navigator and Traveler Express evoked potential systems. Both products are IBM compatible PC based products. The Navigator is a desktop model with a VGA color monitor. The Traveler Express is a portable system with a built-in monochrome display. The Traveler Express can also be connected to an external monitor for color display. The software for these products is identical. The computer hardware is the only difference.
The Bio-logic products can be programmed with your specific test parameters or protocols. These protocols can be linked together for automatic test sequences. For example, the user can establish a protocol for the right ear at 80dB to collect 1500 samples. After this is complete, the system will automatically store the results and initiate another test at 60dB, as soon as a user-defined pause period has elapsed. This process can proceed to run automatically at a lower intensity and switch to the other ear. While collecting, you can mark and analyze the current wave or previous waves. Of course, the system can automatically be configured to do two runs at each intensity or any other sequence you prefer.
BIO-LOGIC GRAPH MASTER
The Bio-logic systems offer an optional feature to make this process easier---the Graph Master program. This program allows the user to view and print descriptive graphs comparing marked point data and cursor position to normative data boundaries. Graph Master automatically selects the appropriate control group to match the patient's name. The graph can be viewed during collection and analysis, providing immediate visual comparison against the age-appropriate normal range. This normative data was compiled and reported by Michael P. Gorga, Ph.D, et. al. from Boys Town National Institute for Communication Disorders in Children. The use of published ABR data has gained favor in the past few years. The Boys Town study included a large population and therefore greater statistical accuracy. This minimizes the need for each clinic to develop normative data. However, the Graph Master program can be modified to incorporate your own specific values.
INFANT SCREENING DATABASE
The Bio-logic Infant Screening Database is an information management tool for use in your screening program. This will assist with the compiling of test results and scheduling. Demographics, gestational age, visit date, recommended return date, physician, and referral source can be listed. Reports and customized letters can be automatically generated. This optional program will run on the Bio-logic PC; however, information can be entered regardless of the test protocol or equipment used.
MADSEN CELESTEA 503 DPOAE SYSTEM
The Madsen Celestea 503 system can perform Distortion Product (DPOAE) and Spontaneous (SOAE) otoacoustic emissions. The system features a significantly reduced noise floor for enhanced sensitivity and rapid interpretation of measurements. The probe disassembly permits easy cleaning of the speculum. The probe can be mounted on a headset or on a shoulder harness.
The Celestea will work with most IBM compatible (80386SX or better) computers. The portable base unit is housed in a small case that can be connected to the computer via the serial interface. All new Bio-logic ABR systems are compatible with the Madsen Celestea.
BIO-LOGIC DPOAE PACKAGE
Bio-logic has also purchased the rights to The Boys Town Institute DPOAE software package. The Bio-logic Scout DPOAE system , like the Graph Master Program, was developed as a result of extensive clinical use.
MORE THAN JUST SCREENING
The Bio-logic Navigator and Traveler Express systems can be configured for automatic ABR screening. With the addition of the Madsen Celestea 503 or the Bio-logic Scout DPOAE system, the Infant Screening Database and the Graph Master program, you will be able to institute a comprehensive infant screening program.
These products can, however, perform more than just screening. The Bio-logic systems can also conduct complete neurodiagnostic ABR testing. SEP and VEP modes can be added. Therefore, you will not be frustrated with a screening device that only conducts pass/fail testing without allowing for your subjective impressions. Most pass/fail systems will not even allow you to see the wave form.
The Madsen Celestea 503 and the Bio-logic Scout DPOAE systems can also be used as diagnostic test devices. Measuring outer hair cell function can provide information about the nature of the hearing loss.
The software based technology of our products will allow for software upgrades as the OAE and ABR research evolves.
