In 1997, Craig W. Johnson served as the President of the Maryland Academy of Audiology. This lead to a very active year concerning legislative issues that effect the consumer of hearing health care services and the profession of audiology. The Maryland Academy of Audiology has been active in both state and national issues. The entire staff of Audiology Associates, Inc. has had an active role in Academy activities. Charlotte Godfrey has served as editor of the Academy Newsletter that is distributed to all audiologists throughout the state of Maryland. Greg Wilson serves a the Director of Legislative Affairs. Christine Schwartz is involved in the Academy's Membership Committee to insure that all audiologists and students are aware of the benefits of Academy participation. The following photographs capture some of the professional events that involve our staff's activities.

In May, 1997 Craig and Barbara Johnson represented the Maryland Academy of Audiology during the signing of Senate Bill 735 (introduced by Senator Craig and Delegate Stup) that changed the method in which audiology members were selected for the Board of Examiners for Audiology. This is the state board that regulates the profession of Audiology. (from left to right, Senator Miller, Craig W. Johnson, Govenor Glendening, Barbara Johnson and Delegate Taylor)
The Maryland Academy has been very active in national Audiology issues. Currently the Academy is actively supporting H.R. 176 which is a bill that will allow federal government employes who have Blue/Cross Blue/Shield insurance to have access to audiology services. Surprisingly all other health care plans allow for payment for audiologic diagnostic services. This bill will allow federal employees the same access to services that all other insured Americans enjoy. The bill was introduced in January, 1997 by Representative Gilman (R-NY). In Maryland, Representatives Morrilla, Cummings, Cardin and Wynn have all co-sponsored this consumer legislation.
June 27, 1997

Representaive Norton later became a co-sponsor of this legislation. Charlotte Godfrey was also present at the meeting and served as the photographer.
