How do we best fit amplification?

The Madsen Aurical audiometer and real-ear test system improves our service delivery. The unit is a PC based machine that can change with changes in our test needs. The day is past that machines are designed with knobs and buttons that are dedicated to a certain funtion for the life of the unit! The Madsen Aurical can provide SPL audiometry with the ability to calibrate the transducer for each and every patient. Loudness mapping is standard that allows us to understand why a patient finds an overwhelming need to adjust the volume on their hearing aid. Real-ear system and ANSI 2cc test chamber is standard with various test stimuli available. The real-ear system has the capability of displaying the patient's own target data based on their loudness mapping data. As the input into the hearing aid changes only the Aurical provides varing performance targets! Best of all, the machine can be linked via software to allow for data storage. Auricals are available as complete test systems or one can invest in the audiometer and real-ear system seperately. When the units functions are seperated, a computer network can be installed in order to link the data. (This is how we have our Aurical's configured. We use one room for audiometry and another exam room for real-ear). One must see this machine in action to appreciate how it will change your clinical life.

How do we assess the difficult-to-test?

Do you feel uncomfortable telling a parent that their child's hearing is "normal" based upon an SRT or SDT or better yet, based on Behavioral Observations? Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions will provide an answer and add tremendously to you clincal data and patient management. Within seconds you can add vital information to your patient's audiologic profile. Bio-logic produces the smallest unit in the marketplace (about the size of a brick) and like the Madsen unit it can be used on various PC's. They use an external connector to the PC (serial port), thus they can be relocated quickly to different offices or test environments. Reimbusement is also excellent! When you add OAE's to your clinical armamentarium your able to obtain vital clinical information for your audiologic management. The true differences between OAE systems relates to the sensitivity of the microphones. What is the useable range of the microphones in terms of the difference in the stimulating tones versus the background noise? A critical question! Make sure you ask this question when considering your system.

Once you integrate OAE's in your clinical routine you will only wonder how you functioned without the information.
